Filtration Experiment

Today in hur3 we are doing our first experiment. In class today we are going to be doing a filtration experiment, this is to divide 2 things from 1 mixture and see if the big or small particles pass through the filter.

Aim: We are separating 2 things from 1 mixture.

Equipment: Beaker, funnel, conical flask, filter paper, copper sulfate, sodium carbonate solution

Hypothesis: I think that the small particles are going to pass through the filter and the big particles won't go through the filter.

Method: 1. Pour approximately 50mL of copper sulfate solution into a beaker.

2. Add the same volume of sodium carbonate solution. A reaction will happen, you should see a cloudy blue precipitate form. Called copper carbonate.
3. Watch demo then fold filter paper to fit inside the funnel
4. Place the funnel with the filter paper inside of it, into the mouth of a conical flask.
5. Stir the mixture in the beaker, then carefully pour it into the funnel.
6. Observe what happened.

Observations:
What did I see while making the mixture : It turned blue and then filtered clear.
What did I see when I filtered it : The chemicals mixed and it turned blue, when it was filtered it filtered clear.
