White Powder

Today you will be a Forensic Chemist.
A bag of white powder has been confiscated by the airport customs.  You need to find out what white powder it is?

Aim: To learn about the makeup of different white powders.

There are  a number of different white powders in our everyday life. Some of these are harmful and others are not. Test the four white powders listed to see which one has been found at the airport.

Here are some examples of everyday kitchen white powders.

Flour, Cornflour, Sugar, Salt, Baking Soda, Baking Powder, Icing Sugar, Tartaric Acid

Citric Acid, Gluten Free flour

You will be given a small amount of 4 white powders on your cardboard. On the black cardboard using a magnifying glass look at the powders.
Look at them under your magnifying glass and record what you see.

These are the four powders we will be using. Upload a photo of each powder.

1.  Cornflour
2.  Baking Soda
3.  Salt
4.  Sugar

Before you add the iodine, vinegar or water you will need to divide each powder into 3.

Materials

1. Baking soda
2. Sugar
3. Salt
4. Cornflour
5. Pipette
6. Iodine
7. vinegar
8. water

Height - Science

THE FEET CAN MEASURE THE HEIGHT

The bones of the feet can tell a lot about a person. What do feet reveal about a person's height? Forensic anthropologists team up with law enforcers to help solve crimes.
Bones of the feet can reveal an interesting fact about an individual. Let's combine math with forensics to see how.

Aim:  To use forensic science techniques to measure the height of a criminal.

Material:

  1. Yourself / human
  2. Metre ruler

  3.

Steps:

  1.  Measure your feet
  2.  Measure your length
  3.  Put results in graph
  4.
  5.
Findings:

Name
Foot  (cm)
Height (cm)
Chloe23cm155cm
Talia21cm143cm
Sharney ( Not here )

Divide the length of each person's foot by his/her height. then multiply it by 100.

Chloe
We found out my feet are 23 cm. My height is 155 cm. We divided my height by my foot length. Then we found out that it equaled 14.8 cm.

Science - Fingerprints - balloons

Definition:

apply scientific knowledge and skills to investigating crimes and helping the police find or eliminate crime suspects. They may also do research into developing or improving

5 Forensic Science topics;

  1.  DNA
  2.  Fingerprints
  3. Clothes
  4.  Footprints
  5. Ballistics

Finger prints

Aim: To look at the different types of fingerprints.

Materials:

  1.   Fingers'
  2.  Inc pad
  3.   Balloon

Steps
  1. Get the inc pad and the balloon ready
  2. Put your thumb in the inc and then press on the balloon lightly
  3. You then blow up the balloon  and then deflate it again
  4. Do the same but with your index finger
  5. Blow the balloon up and tie it

Conclusion: This was a very cool experiment because we found out what fingerprint we had , even tho many people had the same they are all different in their own was , in this experiment I found out I have an arch fingerprint.
Lifting fingerprints

Aim: To learn how to lift hidden fingerprints from an object.

1. Lifting and Gathering fingerprints.

Equipment:
  1.   Brush
  2.   Plastic
  3.  Baby powder
  4. Tape
  5.   Finger
  6. Black card
  7. Magnifying glass
Method:
  1. Get your plastic, brush, and baby powder
  2.   Press hard  on the plastic to create a fingerprint
  3.   Get the powder and brush some powder powder onto your fingerprint
  4. Cut a small piece of tape and put it on the fingerprint
  5. then put the tape on the black cardboard to revel  what type of fingerprint you have

Results:

Lifted fingerprints

Conclusion:In conclusion it was really fun and it has been really interesting and

something I could do next time to make it better is being more steady when I am pressing on the plastic , I think fingerprints are handy because it helps investigators with who the criminal is and where they have been.
